This tutorial walks through a finishing method for a cross stitch piece (flat or slightly padded), turning it into a framed ornament or wall hanging with trim and a hanging loop.
What You’ll Need
- Finished cross stitch piece
- Backing fabric
- Trim (e.g. piping, braid, or decorative edging)
- Ribbon, cord, or loop for hanging
- Fusible interfacing (optional, for stability)
- Sharp scissors and small snips
- Needle and thread matching your project
- Pins or clips
- Iron and ironing board
Step 1: Trim the Stitching
Trim the stitched fabric, leaving a border around the design. Use a ruler or drawn-thread method to keep edges even.
Step 2: Prepare the Backing Side
Cut the backing fabric to match the trimmed front piece. If using interfacing, fuse it now to the wrong sides of both front and backing fabrics.
Step 3: Align & Pin
Place the front and backing pieces right sides together, matching edges. Pin or clip securely to prevent shifting during stitching.
Step 4: Sew Around Edges
Sew around the perimeter using a backstitch or small running stitch, leaving a small opening for turning and inserting trim or the hanging loop. Reinforce corners by stitching over them more than once.
Step 5: Turn and Shape
Clip the corners (without cutting stitches), then turn the piece right side out through the opening. Use a tool (like a chopstick) to gently push the corners into sharp points.
Step 6: Insert the Hanging Loop & Trim
- Thread the ribbon or cord through the top opening so it becomes your hanger.
- Position the decorative trim around the edges of the piece.
- Hand-stitch the trim in place, catching both front and backing fabrics with small stitches along the trim edge.
Step 7: Close the Gap
Use a ladder stitch or slip stitch to sew the open seam closed. Ensure the trim overlaps the seam and helps conceal stitching.
Step 8: Final Press & Inspection
Gently steam or press from the back side to flatten seams and smooth the piece. Check for stray threads or uneven trim and tidy them up before hanging or displaying.
Finished Piece
The result is a neatly finished ornament or wall hanging with clean edges, decorative trim, and a clean hanging loop. Perfect for seasonal decor or gifting.
